Each year, Dr. James‘s law class conducts a mock trial based on State vs. Peggy Stewart, in which Peggy Stewart is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her husband. Students receive a copy of the original case summary and are assigned roles as prosecution attorneys, defense, attorneys, witnesses, or jury members. How did the trial unfold this year? Our AP Statistics students began their end-of-semester inference project with a data collection activity that left a strongly significant impression—sampling Bean Boozled jelly beans to test the claimed flavor ratios.
Using confidence intervals and significance testing, they bravely investigated whether the odds of getting a nasty flavor were really what the box said. They even talked Dr. Faircloth and Mrs. Page into helping sample a few beans!
Between “booger” and “dead fish” these students crunched the numbers while trying not loose their composure. Proud of their dedication to data—even when it tastes like “stinky socks.” 🤣
